Press Room Cafe, Conway. Two centuries of family history is behind the recent opening of the Press Room Café in Conwy. Husband and wife team Stewart and Ros Jones were looking for a suitable site to set up a new restaurant and were attracted by the location of a semi-derelict building close to Conwy Castle. “It was an amazing coincidence”, explains Ros, “it was only later that we discovered that the building was part of the site of the North Wales Weekly News founded by my husband’s great great grandfather way back in the early 1800s”.

Much of the conversion work was carried out by my brother in law Alun Jones, making this a real family business. The new restaurant is a combination of contemporary coffee bar/ smart café restaurant and reflects the family heritage in more than name only. The interior is decorated with photographs dating back to 1890 of the presses in action, breakfast menu items are the Morning Edition and the lunch menu carries the title of Daily Post. Fresh homemade food based on local produce with a range of healthy options reflects a commitment to quality that is designed to build an all year round local customer base rather than restricting the business to passing tourists. At present the Press Room opens during the day only but at the end of the busy summer season Stewart and Ros plan to add a dinner menu to meet local needs over the winter.
The kitchen was designed and installed by BETTAquip Foodservice Solutions in the basement of the building. It’s an awkward shape that needed some creative thinking to make the best of the space but our chefs are delighted with the result explains Ros “I particularly like the walk-in cold room that gives us lots of storage space. I also find the saladette unit, which combines refrigerated storage with a preparation area, very useful as we use lots of
freshly prepared salads”.
The cooking suite of Electrolux 700 line units combines boiling rings with an oven, fryer and grill. BETTAquip also supplied a convection oven, a professional dishwasher that provides high performance from a machine little bigger than a domestic model and stainless steel preparation tabling, all from the Electrolux Professional range.
